“What tools do you use?”
I’ve seen that question asked of professional artists many times. Heck, I’ve asked that question myself. And, in turn, I’ve been asked as well.
Sometimes that question can go along with: who are your influences or where did you learn to draw or what flavor gum do you chew when you draw?
Okay, that last one was a joke, right? Right?
Creators who are still learning their craft (and really, that should be all of us) are hoping those kernels of wisdom will help make their work look better. I doubt anyone really thinks knowing the brand of pencil or brush will catapult them into the big leagues.
At least, they shouldn’t, right? Right?
For example, Frank Cho does some AMAZING work using regular ballpoint pens. Simply awesome stuff. (And you can check out his drawing videos and see for yourself)
Talent, technique, practice, diligence, more practice are some of the ingredients involved in achieving a chance to make comics.
At Sketch Magazine, we’re here to help with some of that, like showing you technique and the insights and wisdom of others who are creating comics every day.
And working to improve their own skills every day.
Do you hear that? Every. Single. Day.
This isn’t an overnight process but an ongoing one. Join us.
And one day you may find yourself being asked what tools you use.
Right?
