Bill Nichols’ Prescription:
Comics
10ccs of the Process with
Jeff johnson

What inspires you to create and keeps you going?

Artistically, I want to get better and better. I’d like to produce something I can be proud of. But mostly it is deadlines and anxiety.

Do you have a set routine?

Yep. I tend to get up pretty early in the morning, walk the dogs, and sit down at the desk. Then I just draw and drink coffee all day.

What kind of output do you try to achieve?

It really depends on the schedule. I mostly try and think of it in terms of hours at the table instead of items drawn.

What inspires you WHEN you create? Music? Noise? Silence?

I listen to a lot of audio books and talk on the phone.

Who was the first comic book creator that influenced you to pursue this?

John Buscema was my first comic book hero.

When did you realize you could follow this path yourself?

When I was in high school, I did a weekly adventure script with a friend for the local newspaper. That’s when I knew I could make a living drawing comics.

What do you find to be a challenge in creating?

The hardest part is just being a good employee. Just sitting down and doing the work. It is very easy to get distracted.

What else do you have to learn?

I need to learn how to write, ink, color, and letter. And juggle.

What keeps you motivated to get better?

I’m lucky enough to be friends with a lot of great comic book artists. Their skills are inspiring.

Can you turn your brain (creativity) off (and on)?

It’s always on. I tend to dream in a three act structure.

What advice do you have for aspiring creators?

Read everything and draw everything. And always practice the basics.

Do you ever worry about running out of ideas?

Not really.

How do you handle the slow times?

I draw something I’m not good at.
