Bill Nichols’ Prescription:
Comics 10ccs of the Process with
Frank A. Kadar
What inspires you to create and keeps you going?
There are so many things that inspire me. Life, movies, music, comics, artists are just a few things that inspire me.
Do you have a set routine?
I kind of do. It took me a while to get a set routine. I usually start in the morning and end around late afternoon. I try to keep it like a regular job.
What kind of output do you try to achieve?
The best I can. I always try to out do the last piece I’ve done. It may not happen all the time but that’s my goal.
What inspires you WHEN you create? Music? Noise? Silence?
It’s definitely music. Music has always been there for me in my life and it’s always on when I do my art. I do have that day when I want to work in complete silence.
Who was the first comic book creator that influenced you to pursue this?
It was Todd McFarlane when I first saw his work on Incredible Hulk run. When he gave interviews and said how he never quit to get into comics, that’s what inspired me to be an artist and choose this career.
When did you realize you could follow this path yourself?
It was in high school. I started getting asked to do art for friends and for the school. I felt then I can go down this road to be an artist.
What do you find to be a challenge in creating?
For me the challenge is trying to create something new and different. The challenge is to stand out among the crowd.
What else do you have to learn?
How to get better at networking, promote myself and my art. Social media was great in the beginning to promote yourself and network but in the last few years, algorithms have made it much harder to be noticed.
What keeps you motivated to get better?
Looking at my favorite artists and getting inspired from their art.
Can you turn your brain (creativity) off (and on)?
My brain is always on. I don’t think it has an off switch.

What advice do you have for aspiring creators?
Practice, practice, practice….don’t give up. It’s a tough business but if you have the drive and patience, you can achieve your dream.
Do you ever worry about running out of ideas?
All the time, especially when you have an idea that’s already been done.
How do you handle the slow times?
I just put my head down and keep creating more art. Even if work slowed down a bit, that doesn’t mean you have to.
How do you feel about the industry?
The industry is large and small at the same time. There are so many artists now looking work, to get noticed and so much competition all around. Trying to break in has gotten harder. There are more self-publishers now more than ever. That is definitely one way to get noticed these days.
