COLOR FLATS
In this picture, I used Adobe Photoshop to color, but it just as likely could have been Clip Studios Paint, or Copic markers, or watercolor. It’s the artist, not the tools that make the art. These days I use Clip Studio Paint for my digital work, but it’s all very similar in its application.

I could skip ink and take this picture straight to coloring, but I’m looking for a more graphic, comic-book look on this one, so glorious inks it is! I’ve inked my own art for years, and that’s the way I think it should be. A separate inker can bring a lot to the art, especially if that inker is a skilled artist in his own right, but if you are working on a budget, then you had better get used to doing the inks yourself.

Costume design is a crucial skill in the concept artist’s arsenal, so this is my opportunity to make Mr. Ogre stand out. So many superhero artists are not good at drawing clothes, with little or no understanding of how clothing fits, bends and wrinkles in the cloth as the character moves and more. If your art centers solely on superheroes wearing skin-tight, painted on clothing, then you are missing an entire world of design possibilities.

What inspires you to create and keeps you going?
This question implies that choice is involved. There is no choice, really. I have to be creative, and often, or I would go nuts. Being creative is life. I don't do much work for clients anymore, because I would rather do my own projects, but I have to be doing something, be it writing or art. The alternative is too grim to contemplate.

I’m roughing in all the details at this stage, such as fingers, facial features, knees, etc. My ogre is beginning to take form! I lightly erase unneeded pencils lines as I go, ghosting them out with a kneaded eraser. Some artists don’t bother, and that’s fine, but I want to avoid creating a big mess. Messes will happen anyway, but I prefer to keep it relatively clean.

There are lots of different ways to render digital art, and I’ve tried and used them all over time. It’s the nature of the medium to encourage experimentation, after all. For this piece, I worked dark to light. On each section I would lasso the area I wanted to light, and use the airbrush to spray into the middle or end of the “cut,” the end closer to the light source. This is a variation of the old “cut and grad” style of coloring.
